Year 5
Year 5 is an exciting and engaging year, packed with fascinating topics and memorable learning experiences across the curriculum.
Autumn Term
Our first journey back in time takes us to the world of the Vikings. We will investigate whether they were simply raiders or whether they were also traders, settlers and explorers. Through a range of historical sources, we will build a deeper understanding of Viking life and their impact on Britain.
In Science, we begin by exploring Space, learning about the planets in our solar system and the wider universe. We then move on to Forces, where we investigate gravity, air resistance, water resistance and friction. We will make links across the curriculum by using our scientific knowledge to write informative non-chronological reports in English.
In Design and Technology, we will design and create our own motorised Wobble Bots, developing our understanding of mechanisms and electrical components.
Our Geography topic takes us to the Alps, where we will explore the region's climate, mountain landscapes and popularity as a tourist destination. Using our geographical knowledge, we will create persuasive tourist brochures to showcase this spectacular area.
Spring Term
In the Spring term, we travel back to Tudor Britain to discover what life was really like during this fascinating period of history. We will learn about Henry VIII and his six wives before exploring the reign of Elizabeth I. Using letters, documents, artefacts and paintings, we will evaluate different historical sources and consider what they reveal about Tudor life.
In Art, we will use our sketchbooks to develop techniques and create impressive self-portraits.
Our English work is inspired by Rumaysa by Radiya Hafiza, a captivating retelling of the Rapunzel fairy tale. We will write diary entries and develop our narrative writing skills through the use of characterisation and dialogue.
The Geography learning focuses on the Oceans, where we investigate their importance to life on Earth and the role they play in the world's ecosystems.
In Science, we will study Materials, investigating their properties, including magnetism, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity, through a range of practical investigations.
Summer Term
In the Summer term, our Geography learning takes us to the world's Deserts. We will investigate desert climates, biomes and time zones, considering how people adapt to life in these challenging environments.
Our Reading and English lessons will immerse us in the exciting world of Varjak Paw by SF Said. We will write imaginative instructions for magical spells.
In Science, we continue our study of Materials, focusing on reversible and irreversible changes. We will also explore Plants and Mammals, learning about life cycles and reproduction, before using our knowledge to create informative pieces of writing.
Our final journey through history takes us to Ancient Greece. We will discover how people lived, explore their religious beliefs and learn about the political systems that influenced modern democracy. We will also examine the lasting legacy of Ancient Greek civilisation and its impact on the world today.
